He placed the stacks of forms on the passenger seat, where his tablet sat beside his useless cell phone.

Zapped with a ray gun, Inner Ezra taunted, only Great Aunt Sarah’s foreign accent voice post-stroke was superimposed over it. Sonovabitch!

The voice in his head also reminded Ezra that he didn’t make many promises—and that he did his best to honor those few he committed to. Ezra pocketed his keys and stepped out once more into the storm.

Beyond, the small town center of Heritage sat mostly dark apart from the kinds of lights that were always on at night in shuttered businesses—those marking exits and alarm systems. The few surrounding houses too. Farther, past the wall, he made out the glow from the line of streetlamps and the church steeple, a dark shadow braced against the gray of the new night’s sky. No lights were aimed toward Heaven.

The cadence of the rain struck him as melancholy, a sadness that wasn’t his but the town’s and only his now because he was here, far from all that was familiar and sane. Heritage surrounded him, but it was also inside him, in his lungs, his stomach. It sat on his skin and tongue. Ezra shuddered and gazed around again. Heritage was in his bloodstream, carried there by the air he’d breathed since crossing the covered bridge.

The aroma of food tickled his nostrils—spicy, glazed, the kind of hot, delicious fare that comes sweet and sour and perfect for dunking in luscious sauces. His stomach grumbled, reminding him how long it had gone without sustenance.

Ezra turned toward the Chinese restaurant. The little red neon sign declared it was open.
